Kashruth Question of the Week: Non-Edible Products on Pesach

Let’s separate these products; soaps and shampoos, are fine. If they’re not edible and they’re not Rauy Lachilah Lekelev, they’re fine. Anything that’s put in the mouth, should be only used if they’re known to be free of chometz. In terms of medicines, this is what we say: If you have a chronic condition, and the definition of a chronic condition does not mean that you’re laid up in bed or in the hospital chas vesholom. If somebody’s a diabetic, or if he’s a cancer patient or has heart issues or high blood pressure (I’m not a doctor so I can only give you some examples), take the medicine you’re supposed to and don’t ask shailos. If, however, it’s not a chronic situation: if it’s a non-chewable pill that you just swallow, it’s fine. If it’s something that you chew or certainly if it’s a liquid, such as a syrup, you should avoid it if possible. If you really need to take it, ask a Rov what to do.
