20 Feb KASHRUS QUESTIONS & ANSWERS WITH RABBI MOSHE ELEFANT
Can one use
very sweet
cinnamon
challah for
lechem mishneh, even
though it is more like cake
than bread, and the bracha
would be mezonot?
Very sweet cinnamon challah
is a dessert-like item. When
eaten alone, the bracha is
mezonot. However, if you
use it as the basis of the meal,
then the bracha is upgraded
to hamotzi and it may be used
as lechem mishneh.
Some people are saying
that blue eggs are not
kosher, but I love them.
According to Rabbi Belsky,
the issue is not the color of
the egg, but the kind of bird
that produces it. If the
bird is very different than
a normal chicken and
produces these eggs, the
OU does not certify them.
Can you use a frozen
challah for lechem
mishneh at your
Shabbat meal?
A frozen challah may be used
as lechem mishneh, especially
if the meal lasts long enough
that the bread could defrost
and potentially be eaten.
Can you have the same sink
for dairy and meat if you’re
only using cold water?
Yes. Best to use a dish tub
(separate ones for milk and
meat) this way you can use
hot water. But so long as the
water stays below 115 degrees
Fahrenheit (not too hot to
keep your hands in it even for
a long time), then it may be
used for milk and meat.
