13 Apr Getting to Know…NY Mets Curtis Granderson
Full Name–Curtis Granderson, Jr
Born – March 16, 1981
Major League Debut – September 13th, 2004 vs Minnesota Twins
Nickname – The big one that my teammates call me is “Grandy”. That’s a baseball thing, I think, because you know everyone’s last name. I think Granderson’s too long to say. Others call me “Grandyman”
Hobbies/Interests – Eating, my passion
About Joining the Mets-. Very excited to be back in New York and thrilled to be playing in front of Met fans.
Favorite thing to do on an off day – I enjoy the food in every city, I look forward to KC for the ribs, Seattle for the fish and chips. Chicago for the pizza and Baltimore for the crab cakes. I like getting the food that a city is known for. I love to eat.
Favorite Ballpark – Anaheim. The playing surface is the best. The grass and dirt are all the same level and the backdrop defensively is easy to read. They usually have a sold out crowd, they’re into the game and have a lot of energy. I also like that Rally Monkey they have there.
Favorite MLB City to visit– Chicago; It’s my home and where my heart is. I also like visiting Toronto.
Typical routine on the road the day of a night game – I try to wake up around 10 and get breakfast. After I get back I watch some TV, check e-mail, and take a nap. I usually head to the field around 3pm.
Boyhood Idol – For baseball, Ken Griffey Jr. and Jackie Robinson. For basketball, Michael Jordan. For football, Jerry Rice and Thurman Thomas.
Biggest Influence for your career – My father who taught me to always take care of business and give full effort to anything undertaken.
Favorite Non Baseball Sports Team – I’m an avid fan of college basketball and the Kansas Jayhawks. I also enjoy the WWE, and attended WrestleMania 23 in Detroit. The Undertaker, Junkyard Dog, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, and Hulk Hogan are of my favorite wrestlers
Toughest Pitchers Ever Faced – CC Sabathia, he is so big and tall and hard to hit. I was happy not to have faced him as a teammate on the Yankees the last few seasons.
First Job – Worked in Parks and recreation growing up in Chicago
Players I learned the Most From – Matt Stairs and Dmitri Young
Best Advice I Ever Got – Do not think, just have fun what your doing
If Not For Baseball, I Would Have Been – In the Education field, my sister is a teacher and I have a college degree
Life After Baseball – I have been involved in the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) since 2006 and taken part in negotiations of the latest labor contract, so I see myself in that area of the game. In addition I may also do something in education or in the broadcasting field
Favorite Athlete in another Sport – Kevin Durant, OKC Thunder
Most Embarrassing Professional Moment – Once not being able to find a fly ball, missed it and the papers next day had picture of me holding up my hands looking foolish.
Most Disappointing Moment – Not getting the chance to win the 2006 World Series with the Tigers
Biggest Thrill To Date As An Athlete – When I was called up to the big leagues and made my Major League debut in 2004 against the Twins.
Most Memorable Game Involved In – The one game play-in game to see who got into the 2009 playoffs vs the Twins.
