GETTING TO KNOW: NEW YORK YANKEES, DJ LEMAHIEU

New York Yankees, DJ LeMahieu collected his 1,500th career hit and 100th home run last week. DJ entered last week with an OPS of .756, better than the .711 mark he put up a year ago, when LeMahieu was hindered by a sports hernia, but still far off his breakout seasons in 2019 and 2020, when he had years of .893 and 1.011, respectively.

Congrats on hitting your 1500th major league hit last week! Do you remember your first hit in the majors?

That is something you do not forget. It was in my third game, first start and fifth at-bat as a Chicago Cubs rookie, It was an infield single off Cardinals left-hander Jamie Garcia on June 3, 2011 in St. Louis. Albert Pujols was at first. He was actually the first one to congratulate me. He was like, Congrats, hopefully it’s the first of many.’ I’ll never forget that.’

How are you feeling these days?

I feel good and want to keep it going. I feel like I’ve had some impact on games and hope to string a couple together here. I feel really good at the plate.

How do you like playing in New York?

I love it. To me, it’s Major League Baseball at its best.

    What drives you?

Competition. I love the game of baseball. I love to hit the ball. It was my goal to make it to the major leagues, and now it’s to win and have a good career and be a good teammate.

Which position do you prefer to play?

I’m most comfortable at second, but this team is stacked with talent. Rather than making sure I’m in there on Opening Day, I’d rather be on a team that’s stacked. That’s why I came here and that’s why I stayedhere. I enjoy it. I enjoy moving around the diamond.

Why do you think you have been so successful as a New York Yankee?

It just seems like I’ve had a lot of guys on base in front of me. I just feel like it’s a really good lineup, and I don’t feel like the game is resting on my shoulders. Watching these guys day in and day out, and watching their compete level no matter the situation, I feel if I don’t get the job done, the next guy will. If I can just get on base and have good at-bats, I feel like that sets up the inning well.

What would you say is your goal this year?

Definitely to win a World Series and continue to get better as a player. We have such a great team and I’m proud to be here.
