11 Mar KASHRUS QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK WITH RABBI MOSHE ELEFANT
WHAT TIME SHOULD
I BEGIN THE PURIM
SEUDA?
The Rema writes that when Purim
falls out on Erev Shabbat, it is preferable to begin
the Purim seuda in the morning (before midday) so
as not to detract from the honor of Shabbat.
(Eating the Purim seuda later in the day can leave
you with little appetite for the Shabbat meal.)
Shulchan Aruch OC (695:2)
However, the Mishnah Berurah cites that Yad
Efrayim who writes that if this will be difficult, you
may postpone the seuda up until three hours before
sunset.
(For example, 3 hours before sunset on Purim will
be around 4:00 PM in New York City this year.)
Mishnah Berurah (695:10)
If you’re unable to begin the seuda before the
three-hour period…
You must start the seuda before sunset, which is
when Shabbat begins. However, during this three-
hour time frame, only a minimal meal* should be
eaten so that you will have an appetite to eat the
Friday night meal.
*(A little more than a kibeitza of challah, which is
about 2oz, and a small amount of meat and wine.)
Rema 529:1 and Aruch Hashulchan 249:7)
IF YOU DO NOT COMPLETE THE PURIM
SEUDA BEFORE SUNSET:
• The challah must be covered.
• Kiddush is recited.
• If you drank wine during the first part of the
meal, Borei Pri Hagefen is omitted during
kiddush.
• Hamotzi is not recited on the challah again.
• The meal continues.
• Daven Kabbalat Shabbat and Maariv after the
Friday night meal.
(OC 271:4 and MB 18)
The Mishnah Berurah writes that if the meal
continues after sunset, Retzei is recited in Birchat
Hamazon, but Al Hanissim is omitted.
