05 Mar KASHRUS QUESTIONS & ANSWERS WITH RABBI MOSHE ELEFANT
Is one
allowed
to eat
blood?
Eating blood is as bad as
it’s going to get. The Torah
says in a number of places
“lo sochlu cal dam”- do
not eat any blood. Not
only are we not allowed
to eat or drink blood, but
any food that has blood
in it will automatically
be not kosher. We know
there are many important
parts of the processing of
kosher meat: Of course
you can only eat kosher
animals, the animal has
to be killed by a shochet,
and we have to check the
lungs of all animals to
make sure that they are
kosher. The next step is
the most complicated,
but determines whether
the meat receives a
kosher certification.
It is something called
“Melicha”, salting. What
the salting does is makes
sure that there’s not a drop
of blood left in the meat.
In fact with
liver, which the
gemara says is
“chulei dam,”
meaning it’s all
blood, salting is
inadequate and
the liver needs to
be boiled. That’s
the only way we
can guarantee
that all the blood has been
extracted. So eating blood
is forbidden under any
circumstances; it doesn’t
matter what type of blood
whether it’s human blood
or animal blood. The only
blood that’s actually not
prohibited is fish blood.
So when we eat meat the
most important step to
make the meat kosher is
the salting of the meat.
